Malibu Beach

Hello reader, and welcome to 2011, and what a better way to start this new year by adding a new review of a bygone era flick, some say that drive-in classics, as the one I'm about to unveil, are meant specially for those who had the lucky chance of living most of the adventures depicted in such classics, but as someone who wasn't even born those days, I gotta tell you these movies are all about vintage nostalgia, and if you're ok with it you'll find every drive-in classic  interesting despite the technical issues of why these flicks were'nt as famous as Easy Rider, Star Wars or Nightmare on Elm Street, to name a few.

Malibu Beach really doesn't have a whole lot of plot, mainly good looking kids falling in love and having fun during the summer break on the beautiful beach of California. I think this kind of fare will definitely have it's place with a certain crowd, while others will ponder what we see in such movies as Malibu Beach, like asking yourself "And the point is exactly?...." But, that's exactly the whole idea of this movie made just for the fun of it, depicting seventies youth with no worries, having fun around the fire on the beach, having rivalry over a girl's heart and mostly sharing some good friendship into an extinct world where characters are careless, naive and free in all the meaning such word can convey.

The core of the love triangle rivalry is Dina, a lifeguard on Malibu Beach, finding sparks with Bobby. Dina's care-free school pal, Sally finds love with Bobby's chum, Paul. Finally  Dugan Hicks, a confident beach bum who hasn't accepted that he's not 18 anymore, has designs on Dina, seemingly uncapable of assuming he's not Dina's cup of tea.

That's about all the real plot you'll find, as the film just shows these characters living it up, swimming on nights when they aren't making out near the open fire, riding bumper cars illegally, disco dancing at the local club, partying, and enjoying days and nights on the beach. The film travels back in time when kids weren't concerned with the responsibilities of life and all they had on their minds was fun, fun, fun (mixed with booze, joints and yeah sex)

Plenty of topless honeys(..a running gag has this dog removing the bikini tops from girls laying out on blankets getting a tan)and dope smoking(..including a rookie police cop who enjoys a toke with this pretty girl whose brother he went to school with), among other activities. I enjoyed the bit with the nerd driving a souped up car, hoping to somehow be accepted as cool and the school teacher who eventually lets her hair down, showing a possible attraction to Dugan. Dugan's quite a shark(..meaning he'd be a stalker seeking pretty teenage girls) when it comes to scouring the beach for fresh meat.

The film establishes a child like rivalry between Bobby and Dugan, with them often testing each others egos (as if that had something to do with conquering Dina's heart) in a variety of ways including a rather showstopping car race and swimming match-up with both a fake and a real shark getting involved.

Ahhh.. Tara Strokmeier. My heart would flutter and loins shutter when she appeared(..ever ohh sooo briefly)on screen, particularly looking swell in a party dress towards the end of the movie, displaying her fetching frame. She is Glorianna, a chick Bobby was connected to briefly at the start, until his blossoming romance with Dina. She's certainly an eyeful and, she hadn't been in the film two minutes before her breasts were exposed. I'm not sure why such lovely creatures only appeared in a handful of movies and suddenly disappeared as soon as their boobs went off screen on a two minute casual sex scene hahaha.

So, here are the opening credits for such a flick:
