Today's entry is about an exploitation film from start to finish, released in 1973's Invasion of the Bee Girls, has aged like the finest wine. If someone wanted to know what does the exploitation movie genre means, this film would be a great example for complete understanding on the genre.
The storyline is pretty simple, a lady scientist by the name of Susan harris (Anitra Ford) develops a secret formula that would give women the super abilities of a bee (not flying, but sucking life through sex) the mad scientist is a female fattale herself but still for some reason she wants to use women to build an army which will terminate men by using the greatest ultimate exploitation weapon: sex.
Effective killing n°1.
Some more effective killing.
Sexual Exhaustion, anyone?
Small town frenzy.
The story is set in a small town called Peckham where strange events begin to happen. Men are found dead in motels and the reason for every single death is sexual exhaustion, so Will Smith, a special government agent is sent to the rescue. He comes in the midst of a huge death tally as in one day or soon the number of men that have died from over-exhaustion rises to 10. We get to see some of these deaths and there is absolutely nothing scary about them.
My kind of scientific research.
Sometimes science can be sexy.
Deadly widows.
Lethal weapon.
what the movie is all about.
The whole film seems to have a very campy edge to it. That is a credit to first time screenwriter Nicholas Meyer who delivers us a script that is absurd at times but Meyer along with the director are able to keep it not quite real - if you know what I mean. The budget is a bit higher than many films of this era but has obvious constraints. The bee hive room was impressive as are many of the female leads. Anitra Ford is gorgeous with her long legs and playful eyes, but she is nothing next to Victoria Vetri who fills a blouse beautifully. Both women are adequate thespians as well(I'm sure this is of a grave concern for viewers of films like this). Invasion of the Bee Girls is one of those really fun movies from the seventies that mixes just enough sleaze with other elements like science fiction to come up with a viewing pleasure despite its obvious shortcomings.
Pollen bath.
watch my transformation!
Horny science.
This whole science biz gets me horny y'know.
dear oh dear.
This is it you bitch!
If interested enough, you can find this film on places like Amazon, Best Buy and E-Bay, I found this movie on the 50 Drive-In Cult Classics released by Millcreek Entertainment, and boy it was less than 15 dollars so indeed it was a bargain, but still if you don't feel like buying a whole pack merely for this film you can watch the entire film right here online.
if the whole film is too much for you I guess you can settle for the movie trailer:
See you later for another great B movie review, this time for Paul Verhoven's Keetje Tippel.
