American Raspberry

Original movie poster.
Before I start describing today's great film I would like to thank the 20,000 visitors and some that have been around my blog for quite a while since I decided on late 2009 to turn it into a movie reviews blog rather than my useless personal diary. I guess the same passion that drives me to share reviews of cult films, b movies or whatever you want to call them is the same driving energy that made you meet your way with my blog, so thanks for that and keep on visiting it, commenting on it and if you're interested enough you could even be posting about the films you're currently watching. The movies here are sometimes rare, sometimes hard to find and most of the times understood by those who got sick of watching Hollywood flicks with award winning directors, talented actors and coherent storylines. Also, all of these films make you go back in time to revisiting some bygone movie making standards such as the exploitation word itself, so be my guest!

Today's story was originally released in 1977 under the title American Raspberry, but as usual with these kind of films it had several names such as Prime Time. This short film is a hilarious compilation of skits spoofing 70s era television and commercials, tweaking racial stereotypes, consumerism, and American prudishness. Its premise is that television broadcasts in American and other countries get interrupted by a series of increasingly offensive commercials and television shows. Nudity, profanity, and all around bad taste are on this evening's schedule.
Racist, but funny after all.
Human hunting was never so entertaining!
a Bold joke.
This movie is of its time, paying homage to the exploitation word and violating many of the tenets of political correctness that mute modern comedy. Spoofs on Apartheid South Africa and Tran Puerto Rico Airlines are particularly notable examples. Although some may find these skits offensive, they make one nostalgic for a time when satire and humor was more unbridled. Those who think that South Park and Judd Apatow movies are the height of ribald humor are in for a surprise. If you are open minded enough you will even laugh during the whole film, the TV spots are nothing but jokes on many topics such as the above mentioned and some more about tits, drugs, gay jokes, clampax and a lot more haha!

Kinky troubadour.
Top Service.
turn your TV off.
I guess there are two ways of understanding this film. On the one hand it's just comedy with a strong content sense of humor, but on the other hand you may consider it a deep critic on the American society of the late 70's (say, that critic hasn't aged for a bit) so, if we feel opinionated we could discuss the background of every TV spot presented on the movie as true examples of what we, people of the world, really are capable of doing to make a living. Haters of the new world order would also find hundreds of examples to keep on hating a little more this sarcastic society in which we are living.

Can you save the world? I don't know, but I do know you will have a blast watching this funny film.
