Children of the Corn

Kill children, kill!

Children of the Corn belongs to a long list of horror flicks based on the talented pen of Mr. Stephen King, who has always stated that he is not very happy with the movie treatment most of is stories have been given through the years (perhaps that's why he directed Maximum Overdrive with the same dissapointing results) The year is 1984 and the stars are Pete Horton and Linda Hamilton two adults who get stucked in a creepy abandoned little town (another iconic reference to Stephen King's writtings) where there's this strange cult organized only by children and led by Isaac and his number one guy Malachai. They believe in this spirit which roams through the corn fields telling them to kill every adult in town and to sacrifice themselves when they become 18 years old, supposedly to go to where their god is (wtf) so, as the adult couple gets stucked because of the car accident (I'm not going to spoil it for you) they decide to ask for help in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are in a way some naive satanic references to the cult these kids practice, cause they are subdued to a leader who represents the will of the spirit they believe in, the self sacrifice issue, and the many rules they follow such as not being authorized to listen to music, play games, talk to strangers and even draw!

After that is all madness as both adults fight to survive against these children weirdos worshipping corn (lol) I gotta admit this movie was way more creepy back then when I was a child and my dad used to rent lots of VHS from our local movie store. Today the movie seems pretty naive, and the way this adult couple gets saved by finding the exact piece of paper from the bible with the exact "what to do" circled with a red pencil it's too much a coincidence I guess haha.

Worth watching? definitely! they don't make them as they used to, and besides it's a Stepehn King's flick! and most of the greatest horror movies from the past years were partially or fully based on his talented pen. The special effects are pretty well done in some scenes where some blood is seen. The crawling spirit under the earth is also a good effect but when we finally get to see this spirit it's very dissapointing even for the 80's standards, the spirit "energy" is seen in a couple of scenes and it seems and feels as if it was drawn using some sort of Microsoft "Paint" software alike, but if you're ok with that as I am you can have a good time watching it.

After the success of this film there were five sequels which continued to develop an in depth explanation of the corn cult, but those have nothing to do with King's writting and with this, the original version.

This is the official trailer for the movie:

On my next review I'll be digging "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II Lovers Again" a 1992 six chapter animé turned into a home video an instant nostalgic classic for the Macross lover.

Stay tuned!
