Captain America 1990

Original Movie Poster.
After the 70's time travel to the earliest TV movies from your favorite American way hero, Marvel decided it was time to give Cap a rest and just like in the comic book storyline they froze our Captain for 10 years and woke him up in 1990 to make him star his first big screen motion picture, well not quite, in fact the idea of a theaters premiere was just a dream, after some negotiations and budget issues the film made his way straight to home video.

Many critics and fans over the world have panned this film, and I think that is quite unfair for a movie that had its limitations. It doesn't rely on state of the art special effects and big coreographic action scenes. Instead, this is a thinking man's superhero movie, focusing on the power of the characters to show what true heroes are.

Captain America and the Red Skull are counterparts, both representing the pride of their countries, America and Germany, respectively, back in WW2. Both have been shot with a super-serum which transforms them into world-class athletes. They fight, Cap loses and is tied to a runaway rocket, which crashes into Alaska. He is preserved there until the 1990's, when he get resurrected and he realizes Red Skull is still alive and healthy, because the serum has allowed him to last this long. He is responsible for the deaths of several historic figures, including Robert Kennedy, John Kennedy, and Martin Luther King (that's an interesting plot, isn't it). And his next target is the newest U.S. president (no, not George Bush). Cap must stop him before it is too late, and at the same time, he must come to grips with the fact that he is in a strange new world and everything he has ever known in gone forever, and that if it hadn't been for him failing to defeat Skull the first time, many people would still be alive (something that is also seen on the 2011 movie on the final minutes).

Comic like promo art.
The movie had some promotion.
The origina suit is here!

The Red Skull, also, hates what he has become, and Captain America resurfacing represents a part of him he wishes was dead. He therefore takes all measures to make sure our hero is killed. The way they constantly pursue each other is both exciting and moving (thinking this is a low budget film of course)
Heroes get the girl.
Captain America!
"Quit calling me bro"
Despite the negativity around about this movie, there are some positive things about the movie,   for instance the way Captain America comes back to life and finds his girlfriend extremely old, and confuses his daughter's girlfriend with his actual girlfriend. And compared to the 70's movies, this film is the best among them. It has a non aging government-conspiracy plot, and it also throws in a lot of comic-book silliness style. The balance works, and combined with tremendous acting, decent music and fair enough action scenes I recommend you to watch this movie even if you're not a comic book fan.

I'm Red Skull!
Nice Shield you have Cap.
This movie is out of print there is no date for a re-release on home DVD, we only know that the 70's movies will arrive on November the 1st on DVD but, no news about this one, so if interested enough probably you may find a copy of the out of print DVD on swap meets or E-Bay. If not internet collectors will have it somewhere for you to download it and enjoy.
